I spent a decade working behind the scenes at large and small organisations in marketing, creative, and operations. Before moving to California, I briefly worked as a cheesemonger. What I learned is that I’m interested in things with personality, and I like when things are done well.
When it comes to my pictures, that’s the goal. I want to draw out the personality of people and places as they really are, and show them in a way that tells their story. Even in my slow tripod work, I aim to create an observational feel that intrigues viewers and makes them look more closely.
I mostly work in black and white. I find that, at their best, black and white photos create a window to a world that is realer than real, more tactile and expressive and able to draw in viewers who might otherwise flip or scroll by.
Because I’ve spent plenty of time on the briefing, directing, and ‘getting told off in meetings’ side of life, I also know the importance of working well together. While I may be a fish out of water in the USA, I’ve been complimented on my calm, unflappable nature and ‘old world values’. A good working relationship is the most important thing to me, and I feel it pays off in the end result.
